True beauty is certainly more than skin deep – we all know that – but skin is still pretty darn important. It is literally the face that we show to the world and our barrier between it. It can convey our personality, communicate our emotions, and keep us protected from harsh environments and germs. Of course, we want to take the best care possible for our skin.
How to actually do that can become confusing. There are innumerable products on the market touted to help your skin – everything from chemical seaweed peels to electrical current generators (yikes). But what does your skin actually need to stay healthy? It comes down to a few simple things.
It’s important to use cleanser to keep your face free of dirt, bacteria, and excess oil. Use one that works for your skin type – not just whatever bar or body wash you have in the cupboard. For dry to normal skin use a mild soap, one without alcohol or added chemical fragrance. Add a drop or two of certified organic lavender essential oil to tone and repair the effects of the environment on your skin. For oily skin, add a drop or two of certified organic geranium essential oil. Wash your face gently, taking care not to scrub too hard to avoid irritation or damage. Don’t use hot water to rinse – just warm. If your rinse is scalding it removes the natural oils that your skin needs to stay hydrated.
A toner is applied after washing the face. It can work to smooth, soften, and calm your skin. Commercial toners often contain ingredients that irritate sensitive skin types – but you can easily create your own natural toner customized for you with the recipe below. This all-natural toner uses powerful essential oils to replenish and restore nutrients to your skin and can diminish the appearance of redness and dry patches.
Good moisturizing lotions should be used every time you wash your face. Like cleansers, it is important to fine-tune your moisturizer to your skin type. Oily skin, for instance, can benefit from a light carrier oil, like rosehip, with a few drops of certified organic Frankincense essential oil added for skin health. Skin that borders on dry will benefit from our creamy Naked Lotion base with a few drops of certified organic tea tree and lavender essential oils (or both). Moisturizer prevents your skin from drying out and leaves it hydrated and smooth. Your lotion will work best if you apply it to slightly damp skin, just after washing.
