Home Sweet Home: Best Practices for Kids & Essential Oils

Your cheeky child may think she is four-years-old going-on-forty, but in reality children’s bodies are not miniature versions of adults. Your kids’ physique works in a different way than yours. They require a special approach when using essential oils – but with a little bit of know-how you can keep your mini-me healthy, happy and naturally safe with essential oils.

Kid skin is thinner and more sensitive than adult skin. When using essential oil topically it’s important to be extra cautious. Do a “spot check” on your child, applying a tiny amount of the dilution before putting it all over them. Observe the area for an hour or two for signs of sensitivity. Remember that young kids also stick things in their mouths … watch them after you’ve applied oil topically to avoid incidental ingestion, and don’t rub essential oils on their hands and fingers.

Using essential oils in a diffuser is a great way to get natural benefits for your kids. Certified organic oils such as frankincense, bergamot, lemongrass and ylang ylang can enhance feelings of relaxation, attitude, motivation, focus, and calm when you need those feelings most. Consider turning on a diffuser in the evening as part of your bedtime routine to help kids be mentally and physically ready for a good night’s sleep. Or try enhancing their mental concentration after school to get homework done with less fuss.

Remember that kids’ eyes and mucous membranes are more sensitive to essential oils than adults. Use fewer drops than you would typically in the diffuser. (Normally use five drops? Try one.) And give your kid some space … don’t put the diffuser directly adjacent to a bed. Place it across the room – or even in the next room. Don’t diffuse for long periods of time (like overnight). Start with five minutes at a time, several times per day. When introducing new oils, observe your child carefully for signs of sensitivity.

One of the best ways to find essential oils that work for your kids is to ask them … diffuse a variety of kid-safe essential oils and inquire about how it made them feel. You may discover a new single or combination straight out of their world!
